The Alchemist Code is a brand-new, anime-themed mobile RPG by Gumi Asia that features an epic anime-themed storyline that details the journey of two brothers from the highly respected House Crowley, Dias and Logi, as they pursue their destinies. However, unbeknownst to them, they eventually ended up on opposite ends of a conflict over the use of the forbidden power, Alchemy. In this game, you’ll be closely following the story of Logi as you help him assemble a team to battle the enemies of the Kingdom of Envylia in hopes of bringing peace back to the realm.
One of the highlights of this game is definitely its plot that I think rivals one of the best anime series of all time, Code Geass. I like how the game dive right into the grey area when it comes to the use of Alchemy – since hardly anything in real life is clearly set in black and white anyway - and how the conflicting opinions of the two brothers each have their own merits. I’m ready to bet that the story will also feature plenty of tear-jerking moments if the little cinematic at the very beginning is of any indication. In fact, I’d say that the game has everything it needs to do a TV spin-off along with a manga series.
Storyline aside, The Alchemist Code has amazing gameplay too. The game offers a rather different turn-based combat system where movement is not exactly grid-bound since you can use the on-screen joystick to move your characters around. Another interesting point is that the map your team will be doing battle in is in 3D and hence, map elevation will actually affect the damage you deal/receive. The same goes for the direction of your attacks. Naturally, stabbing someone from the back will grant you more damage dealt than stabbing someone from the front. The map has details like trees, cliffs and large rocks which you can use to your advantage as well.
The game will also require you to assemble your own team of heroes. New heroes can usually be summoned, though you might need to collect enough of the hero’s Soul Shards first. As with any RPG, these characters can be improved through a wide variety of ways, ranging from equipping them with items to leveling them up. You can even upgrade their special abilities, increase their job level, and improve their hero quality by adding stars through the Limit Break system. Heroes can also be evolved once they have obtained all the stars needed.
In terms of PvE, the game has a questing system, which consists of Missions (Daily and Milestones) and Challenges, in addition to a story-based campaign and several other dungeons where you can farm for experience, game currency, or crafting and upgrade materials. The dungeons can be solo-ed or you can try to get a group through the Multiplay option. On the other hand, for PvP, you can duel other players’ teams in the Arena or you could, assumingly, battle other players in a team-vs-team-like PvP via Multiplay Battle.
Being an anime-themed game, The Alchemist Code has some pretty sweet anime visuals that will definitely appeal to fans of the genre. The graphical styles used for the actual gameplay and the animation part of the game are very distinct as well since the gameplay’s visuals are going for a more chibi-like look. The inspirational music in this game is also quite epic. In fact, if you listen to the music without seeing that it’s a game, you would probably have guessed that the music is intended for an anime TV show rather than a game. It’s that good!
To sum up, The Alchemist Code is a really addictive, anime-themed mobile RPG that doesn’t only have one of the best original anime storylines for a mobile game; it also features a slightly different turn-based combat system that’s set on a 3D map where factors like direction of attack and elevation will affect the damage you deal. The number of missions, dungeons and events in the game is astounding as well. Boring is definitely not in this game’s vocabulary.
