Shin Megami Tensei is one of the most popular Japanese RPG franchises in the gaming world. The series has always been a mainstay mostly in handheld consoles, especially the Nintendo-made devices. With mobile devices taking over the gaming landscape, it’s no surprise that SEGA (and Atlus) have brought it to our phones in the form of Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2. If you’ve played an SMT game before, you will feel right at home: it utilizes the turn-based battle elements the main series is known for, and it also possesses an interesting world and intriguing story. With that said, is it a game you would want to try out? Let’s check out what it has to offer.
Given its Japanese roots, Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2’s graphics and art style are anime-inspired. In addition, it is plot-heavy, with progress being divided into story chapters filled with characters interacting and summed up with a battle. Overall, the story feels like it was directly taken from an anime series which is a good thing. Character interaction involves the rare sequences wherein you have to make dialogue choices, but you’ll mostly just have to read what the characters are saying. That aside, you won’t get to customize your character, though you get to pick one: the choice is limited to silent male and lady protagonist. Regardless of your choice, you’ll play as young person tasked to fight off demons who have invaded the world in a not-so distant future.
In Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2, you will join a group of people with different motivations and backstories, but with a common goal to stop the invaders. Although you could argue that the characters look a little eccentric and tropey, this is part of the franchise’s charm. Moreover, their designs are pretty cool to look at, considering that the ones who worked on them are veterans in the industry. The game also has stellar Japanese voice acting which enhances the overall experience.
Like in other Shin Megami Tensei games, the battles in Liberation mainly involve demons. If you’ve played an SMT game or even something like Persona, you’ll find some of these demons familiar. These include Jack Frost, Pyro Jack, Archangel, and even Rakshasa. The battles are turn-based, and the controls are configured for mobile devices, which makes the experience much more streamlined. You have to contend with each demon’s strengths and weaknesses, which follows the tried and tested rock-papers-scissors format. You can recruit demons and add them to your party, which is an important aspect of the game, given that strengthening them requires you to fuse them to create something stronger.
Given that this is a freemium game Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 does have some annoying monetization elements. For example, there’s an energy element which severely limits your play time, while there is a plethora of virtual currencies to upgrade your demons. Upgrades feel a little unnecessary at first due to the ease of the early chapters and enemies, but spending real money might be needed to finish the latter stages.
Overall, Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 is a decent mobile version of the main series and is definitely something both fans of the franchise and newbies would want to try out. The freemium aspects dampen the experience a bit, but nevertheless, it’s a great game and is faithfully SMT. With outstanding graphics and art style as well as turn-based battles, you’re in for a huge treat if you ever get to download it. Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 Summary
