If you’re a fan of anime-inspired JRPGs, Closers is arguably a game you would want to check out. Free-to-play on Steam, it’s currently on early access, which means the game is currently being developed and features are being added. The Japanese version has more features, thanks to an earlier release date and the exhaustive process of localizing the western release. With that said, should you open the door for Closers or lock it from your backlog forever? Let’s check it out.

The first thing you will notice about the game is its eye-popping visuals which are a class above other full titles. Considering that it’s made and fully-optimized for the PC, everything stands out: from the character designs up to the battle sequences where powerful skills and abilities are unleashed. As long as your computer has the recommended specifications, you can set the graphics on high and enjoy the experience it provides. Although it’s mainly a side-scrolling game, it’s in 3D.

The game kicks off the way other games do: character creation. You can pick from nine different characters, each with his or her own skills and abilities. Note that by picking one, you will also be choosing their respective class. These include Seha the Striker, Seulbi the Caster, J the Fighter, Miseltein the Lancer, Yuri the Ranger, Nata the Hunter, Levia the Witch, Harpy the Rogue, and Tina the Gunner. Unfortunately, these characters already have a set appearance, which means you can’t change their age, sex, hair color, and other elements.

Later on though, you have the option to change their appearance through their clothing, accessories, and other visual elements. You can gain them from quests or buy them from the shop. This part also opens up the question: does the game have pay-to-win elements? Although it’s a far cry to say that progression in the game solely relies on items, some items give your characters stat boosts. If you’re a premium player, you will certainly have an advantage over free players especially in the PvP arenas.

The story is like that of a typical, trope-filled JRPG. You will take the mantle of a high school student blessed with powers but with the burden of saving mankind from monsters from another dimension. Story progression is mainly done through various missions and sidequests. Though there are small cutscenes and dialogues (note that each character’s interactions are different), they are a minor part of the game. The action-based combat is the game’s focal point, so if you’re looking for anything compelling story-wise, it’s not here. Everything is as linear as MMOs get: you can’t go to the next mission without finishing the one before it. Given that it’s a free-to-play game, it has an energy system which limits your dungeon runs.

Upgrading your character, accessing missions, going to the PvP arena, and buying items is done through various hubs where players gather. In addition to these, there is a housing system you can unlock. Here you can design the interior, add maids and hang out.

Overall, if you’re a fan of games that focus mainly on action, then Closers is arguably one of the games to add on your backlog. Though its freemium elements hold it back, its gameplay, visual elements, and sidescrolling action set it apart from its peers. Its art and character designs stand out as well, even without over-the-top fan service. It is available on Steam, so give it a try. Closers Summary
